    A

    Accounts payable automation
Software that captures supplier invoices, extracts their details, matches them to purchase orders, routes them for approval, and schedules payment, so the bills you pay need far less manual data entry. How to automate invoice processing
    Agentic workflow
A workflow in which an AI agent plans and carries out some of the steps itself, usually inside limits set by a larger rule-based process and with human approval for risky actions. What is an AI agent?
    AI agent
Software built around an AI model that is given a goal and a set of tools (such as a calendar, CRM, or email) and decides which steps to take to reach that goal, checking the results as it goes. What is an AI agent?
    API Application Programming Interface
A defined way for one piece of software to request data or actions from another. Most modern business apps offer an API, which is what lets automation tools connect them. Lesson: connecting your tools
    API key
A secret code that identifies your account when software calls an API. Treat it like a password: store it securely, give each integration its own key, and never paste it anywhere public.
    Approval workflow
An automation that routes a request (an expense, a discount, a document) to the right person to approve or reject, then continues based on their decision. Document workflow automation
    Artificial intelligence (AI)
Software that performs tasks that normally need human intelligence, such as understanding language, recognizing images, or making predictions. In business automation, AI most often reads, sorts, extracts, summarizes, and drafts text. AI vs. automation
    Automation platform
Software for building workflows that connect apps with little or no code, such as Zapier, Make, n8n, or Microsoft Power Automate. Also called an integration platform or iPaaS. Zapier vs. Make vs. n8n

    B

    Batch processing
Handling records in groups on a schedule (for example, every night) instead of one at a time as they arrive. Common for large data loads, reports, and discounted AI jobs that are not urgent.
    Business process automation (BPA)
Using software to run multi-step business processes, such as onboarding, invoicing, or approvals, with little manual work. BPA usually spans several apps, people, and decisions. Business process automation guide
